Shepherd Women Handle Mansfield to Reach 20-Win Mark

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Senior forward Anna Ross (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights/WV State) recorded career highs of 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead  Shepherd (20-8, 14-8) to a 91-53 win over Mansfield (3-25, 1-21) on Senior Day in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Ross connected on 12-of-19 field goals with a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. She was 3-of-3 from the foul line.

Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 21 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard Jordan Smith (Manassas, Va./Colgan) tossed in 16 points. Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 13 points and eight boards, while freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort)  added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 assists.

Sydney Reed scored 15 points to lead the Mounties. Kira Merritt added 10 points, while Jasmine Hilton added nine.

Shepherd had a 52-25 lead at the half with Ross (14), McLaughlin (14), Clayton (13), and Beeman (10) all in double figures for the Rams.

Shepherd shot 55 percent (33-60) from the floor with a 59.3 percent effort (16-27) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 81.8 percent (9-11) of their free throws.

Mansfield hit on 30 percent (18-60) from the floor with a 36.4 percent effort (8-22) from three-point range for the game. The Mounties connected on 75 percent (9-12) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 46-26 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed 16. Shepherd had seven steals and Mansfield had nine.

The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Lock Haven in first-round action of the PSAC Tournament. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. at the Butcher Center.

Notes: Shepherd reached the 20-win mark for the fifth time (2001, 20-7; 2008, 24-7; 2012, 20-11; 2015, 22-10) in program history …  Shepherd' s 16 three-pointers in the game set a single-game mark eclipsing the old mark of 14 set earlier this season against Fayetteville State … Beeman's double-double was her fifth of the season.
