Shepherd Baseball Splits with Frostburg State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (7-7) split a pair of games with Frostburg State (3-6) in doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. Frostburg State earned a 14-10 win in game one and Shepherd gained the split with an 8-5 win in the nightcap.

Junior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the Rams in the nightcap victory. He belted a solo blast in the second inning.

Redshirt-junior second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) added a 2-for-2 effort with a solo homer.

The Rams scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the win.

Junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) smacked a two-run double in the fifth to give the Rams a 6-5 lead. Sophomore designated hitter Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) added a two-run double in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (3.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-2) earned the win in relief. Frostburg State starter AJ Campbell (5.0 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) (0-3) took the loss.

The Rams plated six runs in the second inning to take an 8-3 advantage in game one. A two-run single by Doss keyed the rally.

The Bobcats scored four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take control of the game. Mitch Fyffe had a two-run triple to key the scoring in the fourth and Ryan Roell hit a grand slam in the sixth.

Sophomore outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Rams. Junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) added a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.

Roell went 4-for-5 with six RBI and four runs scored to pace Frostburg State.

Chris Roosevelt (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Bobcats. Senior reliever Tyler Shorter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (1-3) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Wilson, North Carolina to face Mercyhurst for a 2 p.m. contest.
