Shepherd Women Fall at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.  – Ariel Jones scored a game -high 29 points to lead Shippensburg (21-8) to a 73-57 win over Shepherd (21-9) in quarterfinal action of the  PSAC Women's Basketball Tournament Shippensburg on Wednesday evening.

Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's)  scored 26 points to pace the Rams.  She connected on 13-of-16 field goals. Clayton added a game-high four blocked shots.

Freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort)  added 15 points, a game-high 11 assists, and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) contributed eight points.

Lauren Mills and Destiny Jefferson each added 10 points for Shippensburg.

Shippensburg had 37-24 lead at the half.

The Raiders led by as many as 17 points in the second half. Shepherd used a 7-0 run to rally to within nine points at 58-49 after a jumper by McLaughlin with 7:42 left in the game, but would get no closer.

Shepherd shot 42 percent (27-63) from the floor with a 5.3 percent effort (1-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 20 percent (2-10) of their free throws.

Shippensburg hit on 39.3 percent (24-61) from the floor with a 20 percent effort (3-15) from three-point range for the game. The Raiders connected on 88 percent (22-25) of their free throws.

Shippensburg had a 49-29 rebounding edge. The Rams forced 22 turnovers and committed 19.

Shippensburg advances to PSAC Semifinal Tournament action on Friday.

Notes: Beeman finished with 219 assists on the season to break the record of 211 set by Kari Lankford last season …  Clayton's 69 blocked shots on the season to tie the school record set by Laura Harkins in 2007-08.
