Shepherd Softball Drops Pair at King

BRISTOL, Tenn. –  Shepherd (3-5) dropped a pair of games in softball doubleheader action at King University (Tenn.) (10-12) on Saturday. The Tornado had a 9-6 win game one and added a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Trailing 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one, senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) walked and later scored on an error to get the Rams to within a run.

After King took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Shepherd added a pair of runs on a two-run triple by sophomore catcher Lindsey Anderson (Winchester, Va./James Wood) in the fifth.

King added four runs in the fifth. A two-run triple by Meaghan Puckett keyed the rally.

An RBI-double by Sydney Bailey in the sixth gave the Tornado a 9-3 advantage.

Shepherd rallied with three runs in the seventh. Junior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) had a two-run double and Baker added an RBI-single.

Anderson and Brown each went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Nikole Counts (6.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (1-5) earned the win for King. Junior pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 3 K, 8 BB) (1-2) took the loss for the Rams.

King took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo homer by Bailey.

Casey Gilbert added a solo blast in the third to give King a 2-0 advantage.

Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the fifth. Sophomore first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) singled and later scored on a single by sophomore third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).

Junior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) belted a solo home run in the sixth to tie the game.

King scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth behind an RBI-single by Danielle Parks.

Emma Hughes (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) got the win for the Tornado. Freshman pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a noon.doubleheader.
