Shepherd Softball Splits with UVa-Wise

WISE, Va. –  Shepherd (4-6) split a pair of games in softball doubleheader action at UVa-Wise (10-12) on Sunday. Wise gained a 3-0 win in game one, while Shepherd rebounded with a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd scored the game's only run in the third inning in the nightcap.

Junior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) led off with a single and moved to second when sophomore third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).reached on an error. Brown went to third when junior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) reached on a fielder's choice and scored when sophomore catcher Lindsey Anderson (Winchester, Va./James Wood) grounded out.

Brown went 2-for-4 to pace the Rams.

Freshman pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K, 3 BB) (2-1) tossed a one-hitter to gain the win. Raychel Lapallo (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 UER, 2 K 1 BB) (3-1) took the loss.

Wise plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain the win in game one. Alexis Miles hit a three-run blast for the Cavaliers.

McKenna Falwell (8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 9 K, 1 BB) (5-3) gained the win for the Cavaliers. Sophomore pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (7.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 13 K, 9 BB) (1-1) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Clermont, Florida to face Palm Beach Atlantic at 10 a.m. and Jefferson at 12:15 p.m.
