10/29/2021 5:07:00 PM

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The Shepherd University Department of Athletics is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Walter Barr this morning.

"The passing of Coach Barr has hit our university and football alumni extremely hard," said Shepherd University Vice President for Athletics Chauncey Winbush. "Coach Barr meant the world to so many people who passed through Shepherdstown during his tenure as head football coach. We wish his family sincere condolences during this difficult time."

Barr served as the head coach of the Shepherd football team from 1971 to 1985.  He built Shepherd into a traditionally strong team in the West Virginia Conference -- winning three conference championships in 1972, 1982, and 1983.  He took the Rams to the first post-season football appearance in 1983 and was voted WVIAC (West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) District 28 Coach of the Year three times (1972, 1982, 1983). Barr was inducted into the Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1989.

Barr, a 1962 Shepherd graduate, was a quarterback for the Rams from 1959-61. He was also a pitcher on the Shepherd baseball team.

Service announcements will be provided as soon as they become available.
