BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Junior quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 31-of-37 passes for 364 yards and five touchdowns to lead #12/10 Shepherd (8-1, 5-1 PSAC East) to a 62-18 win over Bloomsburg (2-7, 1-5 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Bloomsburg on Saturday. Bagent set several Shepherd passing marks.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Bagent teamed with freshman wide receiver Ryan Beach (Frederick, Md./Northwest) on a 67-yard scoring strike with 11:42 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
Bagent found Beach in the back of the end zone for five-yard scoring pass with 1:29 left in the first quarter to up the lead to 14-0.
Bloomsburg got on the board when David LePoidevin fired a 60-yard scoring strike to Malik Langley as time expired in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was no good.
Bagent found graduate student wide receiver Josh Gontarek (New Market, Md./Linganore/Shippensburg) on a slant for a four-yard scoring strike with 9:53 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 21-6 advantage.
LePoidevin teamed with Tyshaun Pollard on a 50-yard score with 8:16 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-13.
Mike Baloga connected on a 20-yard field goal for the Huskies with four seconds left in the half make it a 21-16 Shepherd lead at the break.
Junior running back Ty Hebron (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored on a two-yard run with 8:10 left in the third quarter to take a 27-16 lead.
Bagent teamed with Gontarek on an eight-yard scoring pass as time expired in the third quarter. The point after attempt was blocked by AJ Mason and returned by Quentin Gaskill for the Huskies to make it a 34-18 Shepherd lead.
The Rams added four late scores to seal the victory.
Sophomore defensive lineman Malik Holloway (Baltimore, Md./Douglass) picked off a Nyfease West pass and raced 23 yards for a score, Bagent teamed with senior wide receiver Greg Leonard (Lusby, Md./Patuxent/Clarion) on a 22-yard score, Gontarek had a 73-yard punt return for a score, and redshirt-sophomore running back Avaughn Holley (Pomfret, Md./McDonough) scored on a nine-yard run.
LePoidevin completed 12-of-21 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns for Bloomsburg.
Hebron had 12 carries for 83 yards and a score to lead the Shepherd ground game. Alex Gooden had nine carries for 36 yards to pace the Huskies.
Beach had six receptions for 113 yards and two scores to lead the Rams. Pollard had five grabs for 78 yards and a score for the Huskies.
Shepherd amassed 555 yards of total offense while limiting Bloomsburg to 252 total yards.
Senior defensive back Ponce Deleon (Greenbelt, Md./Montgomery Blair) led the Rams with seven tackles (three solos). He also added a pair of pass breakups. Chris Monaco, Nyree Ford-Cherry, and Gaskill each had nine tackles to pace Bloomsburg.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host East Stroudsburg for a noon contest.
Notes: Bagent added to his list of Shepherd passing marks with his performance today … he now has the record for most career pass attempts with 1,206 to surpass the old mark of 1,172 set by Jeff Ziemba … Bagent's 364 passing yards today give him 10,484 career passing yards to eclipse the old mark of 10,422 set by Ziemba … Bagent (101) now has over 100 touchdown passes in his career.
