Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd Univeristy (1-0) outlasted Hillsdale (College (4-7) for an 8-6 victory at the Glenville State Tournament on Friday in the season opener for the Rams.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer by senior shortstop
Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) keying the scoring.
Hillsdale scored a pair of runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2 behind RBI-singles from Natalie Stepanenko and Sam Catron.
The Rams added three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With a two-run single by senior outfielder
Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) keying the rally.
The Chargers added two runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Stepanenko.

Hillsdale plated two more runs in the sixth with a solo home run by Madison Stoner highlighting the rally.
Shepherd completed the scoring in the sixth as junior third baseman
Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) reached on a single and later scored on a double off the bat of sophomore first baseman
Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke).
Davis went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the Rams.
Stoner went 2-for-2 to lead the Chargers.
Junior pitcher
Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (1-0) went six innings with five strikeouts to gain the win for the Rams. Senior pitcher
Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) set the Chargers down in order in the seventh to notch the save. Julia Sayles took the loss for Hillsdale.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face Tiffin at 11 a.m. and Charleston at 1 p.m. in second day action of the Glenville State Tournament.
