Shepherd Women Rally Past Christopher Newport

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Sophomore guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) recorded game highs of 24 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists to lead Shepherd University (2-0) to an 83-71 win over Christopher Newport University (0-0) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday evening. 

Beeman hit on 9-of-13 field goals with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-4 from the foul line. She posted her second consecutive double-double. Her 11 rebounds are a career-high effort. 

Senior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 19 points, while senior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 18 points and seven boards. 

The Captains were led by Jasmine Norman with 12 points. Anaya Simmons had 11 and Camille Malager tossed in 10. 

Christopher Newport had four players with seven points in the first half and took a 44-38 lead into the break. 

Beeman scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half to help Shepherd rally for the win. She tallied 13 points in the fourth quarter as Shepherd outscored Christopher Newport, 28-15 in the final stanza. 

Shepherd shot 56.9 percent (33-58) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (5-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 80 percent (12-15) of their free throws. 

Christopher Newport hit on 41.8 percent (28-67) from the floor with a 41.7 percent effort (10-24) from three-point range for the game. The Captains connected on 66.7 percent (6-9) of their free throws. 

Rebounds were even at 34 apiece. The Rams had 21 turnovers and forced 20. Both teams had seven steals. 

Notes: The game was an exhibition game for Christopher Newport …  Shepherd is 16-3 at the Butcher Center over the past two seasons … the Captains posted a 25-4 mark last season.
