Shepherd Football Tops Mercyhurst

WHEELING, W.Va. –  Junior running back Ty Hebron (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) had eight carries for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Shepherd to a 38-14 win over Mercyhurst in football action at Wheeling Island Stadium on Saturday.  

Shepherd opened the scoring when Hebron ran 13 yards for a touchdown with 10:29 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point. 

Mercyhurst answered back when Michael Lowery tossed a three-yard scoring pass to Cameron Bazemore with 2:58 left in the first quarter. Ethan Ziegenfuss added the extra point to tie the game at 7-all. 

Shepherd took a 10-7 lead into the break behind a 31-yard field goal by August-Scriven with 8:44 left in the second quarter. 

Hebron scored on a 16-yard jaunt with 10:18 left in the third quarter to up the lead to 17-7. 

Redshirt-sophomore running back Avaughn Holley (Pomfret, Md./McDonough)recovered an errant snap in the end zone for a score with 7:38 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 24-7 advantage. 

Mitch McKenzie teamed with Russell Pylak on a 10-yard score for the Lakers to cut the lead to 24-14. 

Shepherd added a pair of fourth-quarter scores to seal the victory. 

Sophomore quarterback Christian Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./Westminster) scored on a five-yard scamper with 12:26 left and Holley scored on a three-yard run with 7:57 remaining. 

Sophomore quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 13-of-19 passes for 76 yards. McKenzie was 7-of-9 for 85 yards and a score for Mercyhurst. 

Austin Kim had one carry for 63 yards to lead the ground game for the Lakers. 

Senior wide receiver Michael Freeman (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill/UConn) had one catch for 40 yards and junior fullback/tight end Michael McCook (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) added two receptions for 23 yards to pace the Shepherd receiving corps. Dustin Shoaf had five catches for 35 yards and Trevon Tate added five grabs for 28 yards to lead Mercyhurst. 

Shepherd gained 275 yards of total offense, while Mercyhurst totaled 265. 

Senior Hassan Marshall (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and sophomore defensive back Richard Akers (Parkville, Md./Milford Mill) each recorded four tackles for the Rams. The Rams recorded five sacks by five different players on the afternoon. Ryan Funa and Joe Impavido each had five tackles for the Lakers. 

Shepherd will host its annual spring game on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. at Ram Stadium.
