SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (16-9, 14-9 PSAC East) swept Lock Haven (5-15, 5-15 PSAC East) in PSAC doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams posted a 5-3 win in game one and added a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one on an RBI-single by senior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison/Pitt CC).
Lock Haven tied the game in the third on an RBI-single by Isaac Porter.
Shepherd got an RBI-single by senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) and a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC)in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bald Eagles got a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game. Blaise Zeiders scored when Garrett Nepert reached on an error and Nepert later scored when Justin Lichtenwainer walked with the bases loaded.
Carr belted a two-run homer to right in the fifth to lift the Rams to victory.
Sophomore shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Carr each had two hits for the Rams.
Gavin Troutman, Mike O'Halloran, and Zeiders each had a pair of hits for the Bald Eagles.
Sophomore pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 Ks, 3 BB) (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Rams. Senior reliever Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 Ks, 0 BB) gained the save. Kyler Mellott (5.1 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 4 Ks, 4 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single by Jake Mastillo.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame as Daugherty led off with a single and later scored when Stewart grounded into a double play.
The Rams tacked on three runs in the second behind a two-run double by graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) and an RBI-single by Stewart.
Shepherd took a 5-1 lead in the third on a leadoff homer by senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky).
Joe Shannon hit a solo homer for Lock Haven in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Bald Eagles added two runs in the seventh on a homer by Lichtenwainer and an RBI-double by O'Halloran.
Daugherty and Schwartz each had three hits to pace the Rams.
Lichtenwainer went 3-for-4 for the Bald Eagles.
Senior starter Eric O'Brien (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman/Monroe CC) (6.0 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (1-1) picked up the win. Sophomore reliever Nate Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (01 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) fanned Nepert with two out and two on to notch the save. David Keller (4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 4 K, 4 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Alderson Broaddus for a 3 p.m. contest.
