NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – Junior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning to lift Shepherd University (18-10) to a 6-5 victory over Salem (9-26) in non-conference baseball action at Frank Loria Memorial Field on Saturday.
Salem took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Noah Suarez singled and then stole second and third. He scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Austin Earl.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the second as a pair of runs scored when Suarez reached on an infield error.
Shepherd cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the third. Junior infielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan) singled and moved to third on a double by graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland). Senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) followed with a double to plate Gibson and move Walls to third. Senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) then smacked a sacrifice fly to score Walls.
Shepherd tied the game in the fourth as senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior outfielder Colton Henson (Spring Mills, W.Va./Spring Mills/Alderson Broaddus).
Salem responded with a pair of runs on a two-run homer by Earl in the fifth to take a 5-3 advantage.
Shepherd cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth on a solo blast by Gibson.
Shepherd plated two runs in the seventh to grab the come-from-behind victory. Schwartz drew a one-out walk and Edwards provided the game-winner with a two-out, two-run blast to left-center field.
Gibson, Carr, and Edwards each had a pair of hits to lead an 11-hit attack for the Rams.
Suarez went 2-for-4 to lead the Tigers.
Senior reliever Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 Ks, 0 BB) (3-2) gained the win for the Rams. Dominic Curole (2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (2-4) took the loss for the Tigers.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host East Stroudsburg for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
