MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd (22-14-1) dropped an 11-4 decision to Millersville (27-11) in PSAC Tournament baseball action at Millersville on Wednesday afternoon.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo blast off the bat of senior designated hitter Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky).
Millersville tied the game in the bottom of the first as Bren Taylor reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Luke Trainer.
The Marauders took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the second on sacrifice flies from Mark Miller and Trainer and an RBI-single by Tyler Wright.
Millersville added a pair of runs in the fifth behind RBI-singles from Cole Friese and Eric Callahan.
Shepherd plated three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 6-4. Senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) reached on an error and scored when senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) followed with a two-run blast for his fifth home run of the season.
Millersville up its lead to 7-4 in the seventh on an RBI-double by Nick Mancuso.
The Marauders added three runs in the eighth to seal the win. Mancuso's two-run triple keyed the rally.
Schwartz went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams at the plate.
Mancuso went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead Millersville.
Jeff Taylor (7.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 10 K, 0 BB) (9-1) gained the win. Christian Wingard (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3K, 1 BB) earned the save. Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (5-5) took the loss.
Millersville advances to face Bloomsburg in a best-of-three series in the tournament semifinals. Shepherd will await word on a possible regional postseason bid.
