SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd (20-13-1, 16-12-1 PSAC East) and Mansfield (12-22, 11-19 PSAC East) split in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action on Senior Day at Fairfax Field on Saturday. Mansfield gained a 5-1 win in game one in a game that endured a 32-minute rain delay. Shepherd gained the split with a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams added five runs on four hits in the fourth. Senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) smacked a two-run single to key the rally.
Carr belted a solo blast in the fifth to up the Shepherd lead to 7-0.
Mansfield plated a pair of runs in the sixth behind a sacrifice fly from Joe Tummino and an RBI-single from Jake Haas.
Carr went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI to pace the Rams. Senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) added a 2-for-3 effort.
Assaf Lowengart went 2-for-3 for the Mounties.
Junior pitcher Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/UMBC) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB) (3-1) earned the win for the Rams. Eric Gustofson (3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (1-6) took the loss for Mansfield.
Mansfield took a 1-0 lead in the first in game one on a sacrifice fly by Lowengart. \
Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Carr singled, stole second, and scored on a single off the bat of Stewart.
The Mountaineers pulled away in the sixth with four runs. Zach Spray hit a three-run homer to key the rally.
Ben Osborne went 3-for-3 to lead Mansfield.
Hunter DePrimo (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 15 K, 1 BB) (6-3) gained the win. Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (5.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 9 K, 1 BB) (5-4) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Sunday for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
