SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University vice president for athletics Chauncey Winbush announced today that Ryan McDougall has been named the head men's soccer coach at Shepherd. McDougall replaces Alex Jones, who resigned to pursue other interests.
McDougall comes to Shepherd after a stint as assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley since August 2020. At UTRGV, McDougall helped lead the Vaqueros to a second place finish in the WAC and a WAC Tournament appearance in the Spring 2021 season.
"We are really excited about the hiring of Coach McDougall," said Winbush. "He has a great pedigree as a player and a coach and we believe he has the ability to grab the reins of our program and continue the great progress that has been made over the last several years."
Prior to coaching at UTRGV, McDougall was an assistant men's soccer coach at West Virginia Wesleyan from 2012-20. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers. McDougall helped lead the team to five playoff appearances, including an MEC championship and an appearance in the Division II NCAA Tournament in 2017.
McDougall was a four-year starter at goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 2008-12. He helped lead the team to an NCAA II Elite Eight appearance in 2010. McDougall played in all 24 matches and recorded 12 shutouts en route to first team All-WVIAC honors. He added first team All-WVIAC honors in 2011 and finished his career with 50 career matches, 30 wins, 24 shutouts, 177 saves, an 0.80 goals-against average, and a 0.83 save percentage.
McDougall has experience working with goalkeepers at different levels. He has been the U9-U17 girls' goalkeeper coach for the Olympic Development Program in West Virginia since 2015. McDougall also has worked with goalkeepers at the University of Indiana men's soccer camp since 2015 and worked the Gavin Donaldson Edge Camp since 2013.
McDougall graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
