Shepherd Cross Country Teams Open Season at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shepherd University men's and women's cross country teams participated at the 11th Annual Galen Piper XC Challenge on Friday night at Shippensburg. Dickinson won both the men's and won women's competitions. Christopher Scharf of the Dickinson men's team and Isabella Cardi of the Dickinson women's squad took individual honors. 

The Rams had six competitors for the men's team and finished ninth in a nine-team field.

The men were led by junior Daniel Burton (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) who finished 75th with a time of 22:15.0. He was followed by junior Stephen Rivera (Kearneysville, W.Va./Home Schooled) (81st, 22:20.7), freshman James Burdock (Stephenson, Va./James Wood) (91st, 23:02.9), senior Hunter Reed (Martinsburg, W.Va./Musselman) (100th, 23:41.9), freshman Noah Cupp (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) (101st, 23:44.3), and freshman Jonathan Weller (Martinsburg, W.Va./Spring Mills) (105th, 24:53.5). 

The women's team had a trio of finishers.

Senior Mahayana Garcia (Shepherdstown, W.Va./Jefferson) paced the Rams as she finished 65th with a 20:53.1. She was followed by junior Anna Berwanger (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville)  (67th, 21:43.3) and sophomore Elizabeth Rea (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) (68th, 24:13.0). 

The Rams return to action on Sept. 18 when they travel to the DII/DIII Challenge at Kutztown.
