Shepherd Men Edged by Slippery Rock

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Amante Britt scored a game-high 24 points to lead Slippery Rock (6-0, 1-0 PSAC) to a 79-74 win over Shepherd University (3-3, 0-1 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Friday night. 

Junior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) led the Rams with 18 points, He connected on 6-of-12 field goals with a 2-of-6 performance from beyond the arc. He was 4-for-4 from the foul line. 

Junior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) added 16 points, while sophomore guard Aidan Hughley (York, Pa./York Suburban) tossed in 13.  Senior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. 

Khalid Gates added 16 points for the Rock. Jonathan McFall had 15 and Jomo Goings tossed in 10. 

Slippery Rock had a 32-26 lead at halftime. 

Trailing by eight points with 23 seconds left Shepherd went on an 8-3 run capped by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jarod Robinson (Laurel, Md./Glenelg Country School) to cut the lead to three points at 77-74 with four seconds left. McFall hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for Slippery Rock.  

Shepherd connected on 45.3 percent (24-53) from the floor with a 37.5 percent (9-24) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 89.5 percent (17-19) of their free throws. 

Slippery Rock shot 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor with a 25 percent effort (4-16) from three-point range. The Rock shot 78.9 percent (15-19) from the foul line. 

Slippery Rock had a 33-27 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 12 turnovers and committed 12. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Edinboro for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
