GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) had 34 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds, and eight steals to lead Shepherd University (25-7) to a 93-89 double-overtime win over Gannon (24-7) in first-round action of the NCAA II Atlantic Regional Tournament action at Glenville State on Friday night. Shepherd's 25 wins set a program record eclipsing the old mark of 24 held by the 2007-08 team.
Beeman hit on 12-of-30 shots with a 2-of-14 effort from three-point range. She was 8-of-12 from the foul line. Her 13 assists tied a season high, while her eight steals tied a career-high effort.
Graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 23 points and four boards. Graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) contributed 22 points.
Samantha Pirosko and Emma Wright each scored 25 points to lead the Golden Knights.
Gannon shot 64 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from three-point range to take a 43-31 lead at halftime.
Shepherd outscored Gannon, 44-32, in the second half to force overtime.
Sophomore guard Jordan Smith (Manassas, Va./Colgan) completed a three-point play with 58 seconds left in the first overtime to force another extra session.
Beeman scored five points in the final 53 seconds in the second overtime as Shepherd outscored Gannon 12-to-8 in the final stanza to prevail.
Shepherd shot 48.6 percent (34-70) from the floor with a 20 percent effort (4-20) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 72.4 percent (21-29) of their free throws.
Gannon hit on 48.4 percent (30-62) from the floor with a 47.4 percent effort (9-19) from three-point range for the game. The Golden Knights connected on 90.9 percent (20-22) of their free throws.
Gannon had a 31-30 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 25 turnovers and committed 16.
Shepherd advances to face top-seeded Glenville State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Sydney Clayton scored 23 points to help lead the Rams to victory.
