Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (14-14, 7-3 PSAC East) swept Mansfield (5-17, 1-9 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 6-1 win in game one and added a 10-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Hannah Beeler.(Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).
The Rams added a run in the second as Purtell singled and later scored on a single by graduate student infielder Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).
Anastasia Berardi had an RBI-single in the top of the fourth for the Mountaineers to make it 2-1.
Shepherd added three runs in the bottom of the fourth as senior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) hit a two-run double and scored on a double by sophomore outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
Shepherd completed the scoring in the fifth as of junior designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) doubled and was replaced by freshman pinch-runner Lauren Alt (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg). Alt later scored when sophomore outfielder Chloee Burton (Maurertown, Va./Central) reached on an error.
Purtell went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.
Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (7-3) gained the complete game win. Danielle Goff (5.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (3-8) took the loss for Mansfield.
Davis launched a two-run homer in the first in the nightcap to take a 2-0 lead.
The Rams added seven runs in the second. Seymour hit a two-run blast, Brown had a two-run single, and Burton added a two-run double to key the rally.
Shepherd added a run in the third as Purtell walked and later scored on a single by Davis.
Sophomore catcher Oliver Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Davis each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) (4-7) earned the win. Alexis Easling (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (2-7) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Kutztown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
