SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-15, 8-4 PSAC East) split with 25th-ranked Kutztown (28-12, 7-3 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. The Golden Bears gained a 5-0 win in game one, while Shepherd posted a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning in the nightcap as junior designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) singled and was replaced by freshman pinch-runner Lauren Alt (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg). Alt later scored on a single by senior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando).
Kutztown tied the game in the sixth on an RBI-double by Alyssa Donato.
Shepherd scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh. Davis reached on a single and scored on a double off the bat of Seymour to lift the Rams to the win.
Davis and Seymour each went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Donato went 2-for-3 for the Golden Bears.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (5-7) earned the win. Sarah Harvey (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (5-2) took the loss.
Kutztown took a 2-0 lead in game one in the first inning in game one on a two-run single by Kate Ostrazewski.
The Golden Bears added a run in the fourth as Zoe Texidor singled and later scored when she stole home on a double steal.
Kutztown added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Hannah Auvil and another in the seventh on an RBI-single by Hannah Reimel.
Brianna Stocklin went 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Bears
Bridget Bailey (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 7 K, 2 BB) (15-5) earned the win for Kutztown. Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (7-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Frostburg State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
