Shepherd Baseball Knocks Off #13 UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Shepherd (2-3) used an 11-hit attack en route to an 8-7 win over 13th-ranked UNC Pembroke in baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Friday. 

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an unearned run. 

Shepherd tied the game in the third on a solo blast off the bat of senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion). 

Daugherty added an RBI-single in the fourth to give the Rams a 2-1 lead. 

Junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) smacked an RBI-double in the fifth to plate graduate student infielder Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) to increase the lead to 3-1. 

The Braves added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. 

Senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) belted a three-run blast in the seventh to give Shepherd a 6-4 lead. 

UNC Pembroke cut the lead to 6-5 in the seventh behind an RBI-single by Joey Rezek. 

Carter singled to score Dewees and later scored on a sacrifice fly by redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) to up the Shepherd lead to 8-5. 

The Braves completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth. 

Muhhall went 3-for-4 and Carter added a 3-for-5 effort to lead the Rams. Sophomore outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland) and Daugherty each added a pair of hits.             

Spencer Faulkner, Ethan Ott, and Rezek each had two hits for the Braves. 

Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Brenden Lewis (Hurricane, W.Va./Hurricane) (3.0 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (2-0) earned the win for the Rams. Junior reliever Aaron Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg/Canisius) (1.0 IP 1 H, 0 R, 2K, 2 BB) gained the save. Will Harris (0.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Braves. 

The two teams are slated to return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at UNC Pembroke.
