Box Score 2 BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Shepherd University (21-14) swept a doubleheader with Bloomfield (11-21) in non-conference baseball action at Bloomfield on Wednesday. Shepherd gained a 14-4 win in game one and added a 17-7 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a solo blast by senior shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the second on a two-run homer by sophomore outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland).
Justin Rivera hit a solo homer in the second for Bloomfield to cut the lead to 3-1.
Shepherd added three runs in the third with a two-run double by graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) keying the rally.
Jonas Espinal hit a solo homer for Bloomfield in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-2.
Shepherd got a two-run homer by senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) in the fourth to take an 8-2 advantage.
The Rams plated six runs in the fifth with redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) hitting a two-run double and Dewees adding a two-run single to spark the rally.
The Bears added a two-run homer by Angel Murray in the seventh.
Miles went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams.
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher John Cummings (Atglen, Pa./Octorara Area/Frederick Community College) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (2-0) gained the win. Edwin Melendez (3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (2-5) took the loss.
Dewees hit a three-run homer in the first in the nightcap to help the Rams take a 4-0 advantage.
The Rams added a run in the second and seven more in the third to take a 12-0 lead. Dewees had a two-run homer while graduate student catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and Miles added solo shots to key the scoring in the third.
Junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) added an RBI single in the fourth.
Bloomfield rallied with seven runs in the fourth with a three-run homer by Murray and a three-run double by Nick Johns.
Shepherd added an RBI-double by sophomore infielder Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) in the fifth and three runs in the sixth on a three-run blast by Miles.
Carter and Mulhall each had three hits to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams.
Redshirt-freshman pitcher Zac Rose (Charles Town, W.Va./Jefferson) (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) (2-1) gained the win. Samir Lopez (2.2 IP, 8 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to West Chester for a 2 p.m. contest.
