Shepherd Football Rallies Past Millersville

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior quarterback Lek Powell (Carlisle, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) completed 15-of-24 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd (5-2, 3-1 PSAC East) to a 35-21 win over Millersville (0-7, 0-4 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Millersville took a 7-0 lead when Ryan Zeltt teamed with Hakim Melvin on a 43-yard scoring pass with 11:54 left in the first quarter.

The Marauders upped their lead to 14-0 when Jose Lopez scored on a two-yard plunge with 2:43 left in the first quarter.

Redshirt senior running back Malakai Brown (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) scored on a two-yard run with 12:29 left in the second quarter. Freshman kicker Keith Baker (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added the extra point.

Shepherd tied the game at 14-14 when Powell fired a 57-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Cameron Dorner (New Market, Md./Oakdale) with 4:22 left in the half.
Powell teamed with Dorner on a one-yard scoring pass with 9:55 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 21-14 lead.

Powell tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to redshirt senior Jack Rosnage (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) with 34 seconds left in the third quarter to up the Shepherd lead to 27-14. The extra point attempt failed.

Jaheim Morris scored on a six-yard run for Millersville with 8:56 left in the game to cut the lead to 27-21.
           
Shepherd added a score when redshirt sophomore running back Jordan Barnett (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge/FUMA/Southern Utah) scored on a 22-yard jaunt with 5:31 left in the game. Powell teamed with Brown on a successful two-point conversion.

Shepherd had 420 yards of total offense while Millersville had 321 total yards.

Zeltt completed 17-of-25 passes for 184 yards for the Marauders.

Barnett had 19 carries for 95 yards and Brown added 12 carries for 89 yards for the Rams. Jaiden Abrams had 11 carries for 30 yards for Millersville.

Dorner led the Rams with eight receptions for 138 yards. Brown added seven grabs for 52 yards. senior wide receiver Barry Hill (Highland Springs, Va./Varina/West Virginia State) added four grabs for 45 yards. Isaac Sines had eight catches for 79 yards to pace the Marauders.

Senior linebacker Harold O'Neal (Baltimore, Md./Harrisburg (Pa.)) led the Shepherd defense with nine stops (three solos). Junior linebacker JT Kouame-Yao (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and redshirt-junior defensive back Naeem Alexander (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) each added eight total tackles with six solo stops. Bryce Beutler had a game-high 12 tackles (three solos) for Millersville.

Redshirt senior punter Ryan Barrick (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) punted four times for a 47.8 average. He placed all four punts inside the 20-yard line and had a long punt of 56 yards.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Kutztown for a 2 p.m. contest.

Notes: Shepherd won its fourth consecutive Homecoming game … the Rams have won 22 of their last 23 Homecoming games … Dorner went over 100 receiving yards for the second time this season … his eight receptions and 138 receiving yards are season-high efforts … Powell's three touchdown passes represent a career-high performance.
