Shepherd Women Fall to Kutztown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Olivia Smelas scored a game-high 18 points to lead Kutztown (14-14, 12-10 PSAC) to a 73-50 win over Shepherd University (6-21, 4-18 PSAC) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday on Senior Day.

Graduate student forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) led the Rams with a season-high 15 points and eight rebounds. She connected on 5-of-12 field goals with a 3-of-7 effort from three-point range. She was 2-for-4 from the foul line.

Sophomore guard Peyton Grant (Plymouth, Maine/Dexter Regional) added 12 points and three assists. Freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) added nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Freshman guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) tied Kutztown's Bella Arcuri and Zara Zerman with a game-high four assists.

Zerman added 14 points for the Golden Bears. Abbey Heard tossed in 12 points, while Sydney Pierson contributed nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Kutztown had a 25-24 lead at halftime.

The Golden Bears used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to gain a 16-point advantage at 51-35 with 1:35 left in the quarter. Kutztown maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

Shepherd shot 39.1 percent (18-46) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (7-21) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 43.8 percent (7-16) of their free throws.

Kutztown shot 46.7 percent (28-60) from the floor with a 32.1 percent (9-28) effort from three-point range. The Golden Bears shot 72.7 percent (8-11) from the foul line.

Kutztown had a 43-23 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 14.

Notes: Cara Minor competed in her final game as a Ram and was honored in a pregame ceremony for Senior Day … she finished the season leading the team in blocked shots with 19 … her 5.1 rebounding average this season tied Sydney Bolles for second on the team … Minor's .887 (47-53) free throw percentage was second on the team.
