SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-15, 5-7 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader with Lock Haven (11-9, 2-8 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Bald Eagles gained a 7-5 win in nine innings in game one and added a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Trailing 5-0 in game one Shepherd plated two runs in the fifth on a two-run double by sophomore designated player/catcher Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).
The Rams added three runs in the sixth on a three-run double off the bat of graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) to tie the game.
Summer Peters and Hailey Irwin each his solo homers in the ninth to lift the Bald Eagles to the win.
Mantz went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Delaney Good had three hits to pace the Bald Eagles.
Faith Persing (3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (5-6) gained the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (0-6) took the loss.
Lock Haven broke up a scoreless tie in the seventh in the nightcap as Irwin led off with a double and scored on a single by Riley McClellan. McClellan later scored on a single by Evelyn Osborne.
Shepherd got a run in the bottom of the seventh as freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) doubled and scored on a single by senior outfielder Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial).
Collis had a pair of hits to lead Shepherd.
McClellan went 3-for-3 for the Bald Eagles.
Persing (3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (6-6) notched her second win of the day. Senior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (2-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Millersville for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
