SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- After careful consideration, Shepherd University will discontinue the men's and women's tennis programs.
All athletic programs were assessed for sustainability as part of the recent administrative prioritization.
The tennis programs showed continued difficulty with recruiting student-athletes and meeting the needs of the programs, along with the inability to show sustainability for the success and retention of athletes.
The immediate action gives the athletic department the flexibility to focus its resources on the remaining 13 NCAA DII sports at Shepherd, ensuring their long-term stability and success.
"It is with a heavy heart we had to come to this decision," Director of Athletics,
Carrie Bodkins, said. "This was a strategic decision for the department and University and in no way a reflection of our tennis student-athletes, coaches, and supporters. We value their contributions to the tennis program and the University. We will support the student-athletes during this challenging time."
All scholarship agreements will be honored according to NCAA regulations.
The department will assist any student-athletes who choose to transfer.
The Dr. Suzanne Shipley Wellness Center will maintain the courts for their members.
"Shepherd University is committed to our student-athletes by providing a supportive, positive experience," Bodkins said. "This decision supports the long-term success of Rams athletics."
