SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Judd Novak completed 11-of-17 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns to lead #5/3 Kutztown (4-0, 1-0 PSAC East) to a 49-10 win over Shepherd (0-4, 0-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
The Golden Bears had three scores in the first quarter to take a 21-0 advantage. Novak teamed with Steve Burkhardt on a nine-yard scoring pass, Jaedyn Stewart scored on a scored on a 10-yard run and Austin Leyman recovered a botched snap on a punt in the end zone for a score.
Shepherd got on the scoreboard when sophomore kicker
Max Barba (Rock Hall, Md./Kent Island/McPherson College) connected on a 26-yard field goal with 8:23 left in the second quarter to make it 21-3.
The Golden Bears took a 35-3 lead into the break with second quarter scores from Stewart on a 29-yard run and Novak and Burkhardt teamed on an eight-yard scoring pass.
Novak fired his third scoring pass of the day when he teamed with Luke Szabo on a 22-yard scoring pass with 2:09 left in the third and Ben Martin III rushed two yards for a score with 13:09 left in the fourth.
Shepherd completed the scoring when redshirt sophomore quarterback
Ezra Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) teamed with freshman tight end
Troy Woolaston (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) on a nine-yard scoring toss with 10:00 remaining in the game.
Graduate student quarterback
Michael Hardyway (Winchester, Cal./Oceanside/Bucknell) completed 20-of-32 passes for 189 yards, while Bagent was 7-of-14 for 67 yards.
Junior wide receiver
Kordell Batten (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) had seven grabs for 91 yards for the Rams. Noah Kracyla had five catches for 92 yards for Kutztown.
Graduate student running back
Grant Swinehart (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby/VMI) had 13 carries for 58 yards to lead the rushing attack for the Rams. Burkhardt had six carries for 64 yards for the Golden Bears.
Shepherd totaled 345 yards of total offense and Kutztown totaled 425.
Redshirt senior
Geo-Di Tolbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass/Fairmont State) recorded four tackles and fumble recovery to lead the Shepherd defense.
Brandon Hile had six tackles to pace the Golden Bears.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Millersville for a 2 p.m. contest.
