Retired U.S. Army Colonel Greg Gadson Inspires Shepherd Football Team with Lessons in Resilience and Leadership

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — The Shepherd University football team welcomed retired U.S. Army Colonel Greg Gadson to campus on Wednesday, September 3, for an inspiring talk on courage, perseverance, and teamwork. Gadson, a decorated combat veteran and double amputee, drew on his experiences to challenge and motivate the Rams as they prepare for the rest of the season.

In 2007, Gadson's vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a deployment in Iraq, resulting in the loss of both legs and severe injury to his right arm. He continued his military career despite these life-altering injuries, becoming a champion for wounded warriors and later serving as commander of Fort Belvoir.

Gadson also inspired the 2008 Super Bowl champion New York Giants, who named him honorary co-captain after his motivational talk helped rally the team to victory.

"Colonel Gadson exemplifies the grit, teamwork, and values we nurture in Rams football," said Carrie Bodkins, Shepherd University director of athletics. "His story of resilience and leadership against all odds has our players more motivated than ever heading into the remainder of the season."

"It was a special honor to have Colonel Greg Gadson visit the Shepherd Football program at practice today," said Shepherd head football coach Ernie McCook. "Colonel Gadson delivered a well-timed and meaningful message to our team on character, poise, and the importance of team. His words were very well received. We appreciate his service to our country and community. We are all proud Americans."
