CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Junior guard
Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored a game-high 32 points for the Rams, but California (Pa.) (20-8) posted an 81-56 win over Shepherd (20-10) in quarterfinal action of the PSAC Men's Basketball Tournament at California (Pa.) on Wednesday night.
Banks hit 9-of-18 field goals with a 2-of-5 performance from three-point range. He had a 12-of-14 effort from the foul line. He added three rebounds and a pair of assists. His 32-point outburst also represents a career-high effort for Banks.
Sophomore forward
Favor Okigweh (Edgewood, Md./Parkville/The Winchedon School) added four points, a pair of blocked shots, and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman guard
Colby White (Buckingham, Va./Blue Ridge) added seven points.
Jordan Buchanan added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Vulcans while Bryson Lucas had 15 points and 13 boards.
The Vulcans opened the game on a 19-9 run and never trailed in the contest. Cal held a 50-35 lead at halftime.
Shepherd connected on 32.9 percent (19-58) of its field goals with a 16.7 percent (4-24) performance from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 63.6 percent (14-22) of their free throws.
Cal shot 49.3 percent (33-67) from the floor with a 25 percent (4-14) effort from beyond the arc. The Vulcans hit 68.8 percent (11-16) from the foul line.
The Vulcans had a 47-35 rebounding advantage. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 10.
California (Pa.) advances to face Seton Hill in PSAC Tournament semifinal action on Saturday.
