Giancarlo Pacheco enters his fifth season as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program. He joined the Rams prior to the 2022-23 season.
During the 2025-26 season, the Rams finished tied for first in the PSAC East division with a 15-6 conference record. The first place finish was the highest finish since joining the PSAC in 2019. The Rams finished with a 20-10 overall record, the second consecutive season with 20 or more wins. The back-to-back 20-win seasons are Shepherd’s first since 1984. The Rams finished first in the PSAC in scoring defense (69.9 points per game) and three-point field goal percentage (36.5 3FG pct.)
The 2024-25 team posted a 21-11 overall record and advanced to the championship game of the PSAC tournament. The championship game appearance was just the fifth in Shepherd history and the first since the 1992 team won the WVIAC tournament. The Rams were one of the best defensive teams in the country in 2025, ranking ninth in the nation (first in PSAC) in scoring defense (64.3 points per game) and ranking fourth in the nation (first in PSAC) in field goal percentage defense (39.1 FG pct. per game).
Pacheco came to Shepherd after serving as an assistant coach at Central Baptist College.
Prior to working at Central Baptist College, Pecheco served as a student manager for the George Mason University basketball team for three seasons. As a manager, he helped the assistant coaches with practice and was the primary video editor for the men's basketball program. He coached at the AAU level for two seasons for the NOVA Cavaliers.
Pacheco, a Fairfax Station, Va. native, earned his bachelor's in finance from George Mason in December 2020. He also holds an associate degree in business administration from Northern Virginia Community College.
