Naim Muhammad

Naim Muhammad returns to Shepherd men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in August 2020 for his second stint as a part of the coaching staff. Muhammad previously served as a graduate assistant during the 2017-18 season.

Before returning to Shepherd, Muhammad spent the 2019-20 season on staff with Durham Academy (Durham, NC) where he was the assistant coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team under head coach Tim McKenna. His duties included assisting with game and practice plans, as well as leading preseason skill development workouts. His efforts helped Durham Academy earn a Triangle Independent School Athletic Conference Championship, an appearance in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association Final 4, and a 28-5 overall record.

In August of 2018, Muhammad joined the Iron Dukes office with Duke Athletics, holding the title of Major Gift Coordinator. Muhammad's duties included assisting with fundraising for all 27 Duke Athletics varsity sports, with a specific focus on men’s lacrosse and women’s basketball.

Muhammad’s first stint on the Shepherd coaching staff was during the 2017-18 season where he served as a graduate assistant. His duties included assisting with skill development, facilitating content to recruits, and running the team’s social media accounts.

Muhammad is a 2017 Shepherd graduate. He played for the Rams for four years and was a two-time team captain. He was voted team Defensive Player of the Year, Teammate of the Year, and achieved All-MEC honorable mention during his junior and senior seasons. His career stats include 1,240 points, 533 rebounds, and 409 assists. The only player in Shepherd basketball history to have a combined 1,000+ points, 500+ rebounds, and 400+ assists in their career.

Muhammad is from Waldorf, Maryland, and graduated from North Point High School. While at North Point Muhammad was a three-year basketball letter winner, having a career average of 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 steals. He garnered First Team All-SMAC and honorable mention All-Met accolades and was a member of the 2010-11 state champion team at North Point. Muhammad helped lead North Point to a 74-5 mark over three seasons.

Muhammad has also spent summers working with i9 Sports Basketball Clinic as the Director of Basketball Operations and PGC Basketball Camps & Clinics as a Site Manager. He has coached youth travel basketball with the Inwood Falcons and DC Premier UAA.

He resides in Shepherdstown with his wife, Hailey, and their dog, Duke.
