Shepherd Men Down Winston-Salem State in Overtime to Win Porreco Cup Championship

ERIE, Pa. – Senior guard Brantley Osborne scored a team-high 22 points and junior forward Morgan McDonald added 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Shepherd University to a 103-96 win over Winston-Salem State in overtime in men's basketball action at the Porreco Cup at Gannon on Saturday night.

Osborne, an All-Tournament selection, hit on 6-of-11 field goals with a 3-of-6 effort from three-point range. He also added six rebounds and six assists. McDonald, who was named Most Outstanding Player, was 9-of-15 from the floor with a 2-of-5 effort from three-point range. He added a game-high four steals and two assists.

Senior forward Kevin Jones (Washington, DC/IUP) had 18 points, junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Ohio Valley) added 16 points and six assists, while senior guard Marcus Pilgrim (Mitchellville, MD/Bishop McNamara) added 15 points.
Preston Ross had a game-high 32 points, while WyKevin Bazemore added 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Winston-Salem State.
Shepherd shot 52.1 percent (38-74) from the floor with a 48 percent (12-25) effort from three-point range. The Rams hit on 15-of-24 free throws (62.5 percent).
Winston-Salem State shot 58.8 percent (40-68) from the floor with a 6-of-16 effort (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc. The Rams hit on 10-of-18 free throws (55.6 percent).
Winston-Salem State had a 38-34 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 22 turnovers and committed 12.
Shepherd had a 41-40 lead at halftime as Cunningham and Jones each had eight points.
Winston-Salem forced the extra session as Tyre Desmore drained a three-pointer with one second left in regulation to tie the game at 92-92. Shepherd outscored Winston-Salem State, 11-4, in overtime to notch the victory. McDonald had five points and Osborne added four in overtime.
Shepherd improves to 9-1, while Winston-Salem State drops to 5-4. The Rams are idle until Jan. 4 when they travel to Notre Dame College for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
