Jeff Ziemba (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) completed 16-of-24 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 37-14 win over Glenville State in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Glenville State took a 7-0 lead when Sean Steele teamed with Jake Harper on a 16-yard scoring pass with 10:20 left in the first quarter.
Shepherd cut the lead to 7-3 when junior kicker
Mark Murphy (Queenstown, Md./Queen Anne's County) connected on a 33-yard field goal with 7:01 left in the first quarter.
The Rams took a 10-7 lead when Ziemba teamed with sophomore wide receiver
Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) on a six-yard scoring pass with seven seconds left in the first quarter.
Shepherd took a 17-7 lead into the break when senior outside linebacker
De'Ontre Johnson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise) picked off a Pioneer pass and raced 58 yards for a touchdown with 7:31 left in the half.
The Rams took a 24-7 lead when junior running back
Allen Cross (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) scored on a 12-yard run with 9:32 left in the third quarter.
Shepherd took a 30-7 lead when Ziemba and Brown teamed on a 68-yard scoring play with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter.
Roberts completed 17-of-27 passes for 183 yards for the Pioneers.
Brown had four receptions for 92 yards to pace the Rams. Dante Absher had nine receptions for 78 yards for the Pioneers.
Cross rushed 13 times for 67 yards to lead the Shepherd ground attack. Rahmann Lee had 16 carries for 65 yards to lead Glenville State.
Shepherd totaled 345 yards of total offense, while Glenville State had 325 yards. Shepherd limited Glenville State to 50 yards on the ground.
Redshirt-freshman linebacker
James Gupton (Waldorf, Md./North Point) recorded a team-high eight tackles (five solo) for the Rams. Johnson added eight stops (five solo) with two tackles-for-loss. Gary Henderson had nine tackles (five solo) to lead the Pioneers.
Shepherd improves to 7-1, 7-1 in conference play, while Glenville State falls to 4-5, 4-5. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. contest.
