WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman guard
Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a game-high 18 points to lead Shepherd University to a 57-55 overtime win over Winston-Salem State in women's basketball action at the CIAA/MEC Challenge on Sunday.
Arden hit on 6-of-12 shots from the floor with a 1-of-1 performance from three-point range. She connected on 5-of-7 free throws. Arden was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore forward
Hailey Brown (Annandale, Va./Annandale), who was named Tournament MVP, posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 11 points.
Sha'Quira Palmer had 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to lead Winston-Salem State.
Mason hit a pair of free throws with 34 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 48-all and force the extra session.
Shepherd took the lead for good at 54-53 when sophomore forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) sunk 1-of-2 free throw attempts with 17 seconds left in overtime. Senior guard
Alex Weakland (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) connected on 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Shepherd shot 29.7 percent (19-64) from the floor with a 21.4 percent effort (3-14) from three-point range. The Rams shot 57.1 percent (16-28) from the charity stripe.
Winston Salem State connected on 26.2 percent (17-65) from the floor with a 30.4 percent (7-23) performance from beyond the arc. The Rams hit on 70 percent (14-20) of their free throws.
Shepherd improves to 2-0, while Winston-Salem State falls to 1-1. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Glenville State for a 2 p.m. contest.
