Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md. – Shepherd University swept UVa-Wise in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Frederick Community College on Sunday. The Rams recorded an 18-3 win in game one and added a 5-2 triumph in the nightcap.
The Rams used a 12-hit attack and took advantage of five Wise errors in the game one win.
Senior outfielder
Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while senior catcher
Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored with a solo homer and an RBI-single.
Senior infielder
Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added a 2-for-4 effort with three runs scored and redshirt-freshman designated hitter
Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) drove in three runs and scored a pair.
Brett Yates went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Cavaliers.
Junior starter
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (6.0 IP 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 10 Ks 0 BB) picked up the win to improve to 2-1. Wise starter R.W. Payne took the loss (0-1).
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in the nightcap as sophomore outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) walked, stole second, and scored on double off the bat of sophomore outfielder
Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary).
Wise tied the game at 1-1 on a solo homer by Bill Steven in the top of the fourth.
The Rams took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame when Wolfe reached on a single and scored when junior designated hitter
Austin Guy (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/Wheeling Jesuit) walked with the bases loaded.
The Cavaliers tied the the game in the fifth as Matthew Wright led off with a double and later scored on an error.
Shepherd plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to gain the victory. Wilson walked, stole second, and later scored on a passed ball. Junior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) added a two-run homer.
Junior pitcher
Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 8 Ks 0 BB) (3-0) gained the win for the Rams. Senior pitcher
Brian Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 Ks, 0 BB) picked up the save in relief. Ben Coffman (0-1) took the loss for the Cavaliers.
Shepherd improves to 8-2, while UVa-Wise falls to 0-4. The two teams return to action on Monday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
