Shepherd Softball Gains Split with UVa-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University gained a split with UVa-Wise in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Monday. The Cavaliers gained a 9-2 win in game one, while Shepherd rallied for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

Wise took a 1-0 lead in the second in the nightcap as Alexa Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Kellie Waycaster.

The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the fifth  as senior second baseman Elisa Orlandi (Owings, Md./Northern) reached on a fielder's choice, freshman outfielder Sarah North (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical)  singled and freshman shortstop Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) followed with an inside-the-park home run.

The Cavaliers rallied with a run in the seventh as Emily Kale led off with a double and scored on a single by Waycaster.

Senior third baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Waycaster recorded a 2-for-3 effort for the Cavaliers.

Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 1 Ks, 1 BB) (4-1) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Sarah Beamer (0-4) took the loss for the Cavaliers.

Erika McLaughlin belted a two-run homer and Sarah Beamer added a two-run double to lead a nine-hit attack for the Cavaliers in game one.

Sophomore outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) went 2-for-3 with a two-run double to lead the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (4-2) took the loss for the Rams. Waycaster (1-1) gained the win for UVa-Wise.

Shepherd moves to 8-5, 1-3 in MEC action, while UVa-Wise is now 1-9, 1-3. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 2:30 p.m.  doubleheader.

Head coach Leslie Lopez was presented a plaque in honor of her 200th career win in a pregame ceremony by assistant athletics director Melanie Ford.
