Box Score 2 MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Shepherd University split with West Virginia State in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Moor Park on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets recorded a 3-1 win in game one, while Shepherd posted a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.
West Virginia State took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap in the first inning as Cody Smith singled home a run and later scored when he stole home.
Shepherd plated four runs in the fourth. Junior infielder
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando Potomac State) belted a two-run double, while sophomore outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) and sophomore outfielder
Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) each had RBI-singles.
The Yellow Jackets added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Josh Kiser.
Porter and senior first baseman
Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) each went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Kiser went 3-for-4 to lead State.
Junior pitcher
Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (5.0 IP,8 H, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (2-0) gained the win. Senior pitcher
Brian Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 1 BB) picked up the save. State starter Eric Roberts (3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) took the loss.
State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning in game one with a two-run double by Anthony Payne keying the rally.
Shepherd's lone run came in the fifth as Porter singled and later scored on a double off the bat of Carney.
Junior pitcher
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 UER, 8 Ks, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Rams. Tyler Thompson gained the win for the Yellow Jackets (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB), while Josh Falbo (1.0 IP, 0 H, 2 Ks 0 BB) notched the save.
Shepherd moves to 4-2, while West Virginia State is now 1-4. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
