Box Score 3 WILMINGTON, N.C. – Shepherd University opened the 2015 season at 2-1 at the Shaw University Softball Challenge on Sunday. The Rams posted a 20-1 win over Shaw and an 8-0 win over Bowie State before dropping a 5-4 decision to Saint Augustine's.
The Rams used a 16-hit attack in the win over Shaw. Sophomore outfielder
Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) went 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored, freshman shortstop Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, while sophomore third baseman
Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) added a 1-for-2 effort with three runs scored to lead the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6 Ks, 3 BB) (1-0) tossed a no-hitter to pace the Rams against Shaw.
Junior outfielder
Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 2-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored to lead the Rams past Bowie State.
Sophomore pitcher
Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (1-0) tossed a two-hitter and fanned 14 to pick up the win for the Rams against the Bulldogs.
The Falcons took advantage of three Shepherd errors en route to the win.
Senior first baseman
Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs batted to pace the Rams in the setback. Senior outfielder
Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and senior catcher
Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) each had a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Freshman pitcher/first baseman
Carmen Vivar (Robertsdale, Ala./Robertsdale) (0-1) (3 H, 4 Ks, 3 BB) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd opens the season at 2-1. The Rams return to action on Monday for final day tournament action when they face Queens University of Charlotte at 11 a.m. and Clarion at 1 p.m.
