Shepherd Baseball Drops Pair to Notre Dame

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to Notre Dame College in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Notre Dame on Saturday. The Falcons recorded a 4-3 win in game one and added a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.

Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in game one as TJ Lett reached on an error and later scored on a ground out by Jake Kirsh.

Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) singled, stole second, and scored on a single off the bat of senior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC). Wilson later scored on an error.

The Falcons plated three runs in the bottom of the frame behind a three-run double by Taylor Neville.

Shepherd rallied with a run in the seventh as senior third baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarty.

Senior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.

Junior starter Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) took the loss to fall to 6-2. Josh Armbruster (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 Ks, 3 BB) earned the win for the Falcons. Matt Seekins (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) notched the save.

After Notre Dame plated five runs in the top of the first in the nightcap, Shepherd got on the scoreboard on a solo blast by senior first baseman Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) in the second.

The Falcons added a run in the bottom of the frame and proceeded to score single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to secure the sweep.

Shepherd rallied for four runs in the sixth with a three-run homer by sophomore outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) keying the rally.

Shane De Franco went 2-for-4 with three Runs batted to lead the Falcons.

Junior pitcher Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (4.0 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (6-1) took the loss for the Rams. Zack LaRocca (7.0 IP, 4 H, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (3-1) gained a complete game win for the Falcons.

Shepherd drops to 23-5, 23-5 in conference play, while Notre Dame improves to 14-8, 14-6. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
