Shepherd Baseball Gains Split with West Liberty

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with West Liberty in MEC baseball doubleheader action at West Liberty on Sunday. The Hilltoppers recorded a 6-5 win in eight innings in game one, while Shepherd notched the split with a 10-2 win in the nightcap.

The Rams plated nine runs over the final two innings en route to the nightcap victory.

Senior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) belted a solo homer, while senior third baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa), senior second baseman

Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area), and sophomore outfielder Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) each drove in a run to key a five-run sixth.

Junior starter Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) and sophomore outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) each had two-run singles in the seventh.

Carney went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Sarty, Shemer and Wolfe also had a pair of hits.

Jordan Meyer went 2-for-4 with a two-run double for the Hilltoppers.

Junior John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (7.0 IP, 11 H, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BB) (3-2) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Yale Hughes (5.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) took the loss.

West Liberty took advantage of three Ram errors and rallied with three runs in the eighth to take game one.

Senior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) belted a two-run homer and went 2-for 5 to lead the Rams. Sarty went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while freshman first baseman Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) added a pair of hits.

Meyer had a 2-for-4 effort for the Hilltoppers.

Senior reliever Brian Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) (0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss to fall to 2-1. Tory Fuscardo (3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) earned the win for the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd moves to 27-9, 27-9 in conference play, while West Liberty is now 21-14, 17-11. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
