Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore outfielder/pitcher
Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) belted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap to help Shepherd University gain a split with Fairmont State in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Sunday. The Falcons gained a 6-4 win in game one and Shepherd earned a 13-11 triumph in the nightcap.
Buckworth went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs, while freshman shortstop
Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Rams.
Shepherd got a grand slam from freshman catcher
Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) and a two-run blast off the bat of junior outfielder
Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) in the nightcap victory. Staley and Taylor each had three hits.
Courtney Iacobacci and Sissy Stubbs belted home runs for the Falcons.
Buckworth (6.1 IP, 13 H, 7 R 6 ER, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Rams, while Bailey Shade (4.1 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 0 K, 5 BB) (5-5) took the loss for the Falcons.
Fairmont State go a three-run homer from Carly Mundie and a solo blast from Iacobacci en route to a 6-4 win in game one.
Amanda Skidmore went 2-for-3 to lead the Falcons.
Senior outfielder
Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams. Clemons and senior third baseman
Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) each added a pair of hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (8-9) took the loss for the Rams. Devin Williams (2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 1 BB) (6-2) gained the win for the Bobcats.
Shepherd moves to 17-18, 10-12 in MEC play, while Fairmont State is now 19-12, 11-11. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
