West Chester Takes Pair from Shepherd Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to West Chester University in non-conference softball doubleheader action at West Chester on Wednesday. The Golden Rams gained a 5-0 win in game one and pulled away for a 15-6 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap behind an RBI-double by sophomore first baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) and RBI-singles from freshman catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) and senior outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern).

West Chester plated eight runs in the first four innings and to take an 8-3 lead.

Senior third baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) belted a solo homer, sophomore outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) had an RBI-single, while senior second baseman Elisa Orlandi (Owings, MD/Northern) added an RBI on a ground out in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-6.

The Golden Rams added seven runs over the next two innings to get the sweep.

Senior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), freshman shortstop Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin), and Schaefer each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Erin Whitman went 3-for-5 with four RBI and a pair of homers to lead West Chester.

Sophomore pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (2.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Micaela McSpadden (3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Golden Rams.

Lauren Altenberger went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and Erin Quense added a 2-for-3 effort with a solo blast to lead West Chester in game one.

Snyder smacked a double and freshman catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) added a single to lead Shepherd.

Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (3.3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BB) (5-5) took the loss for the Rams. Amanda Houck (7.0 IP, 2 H, 4 Ks, 2 BB) (10-3) earned the complete game win for the Golden Rams.

Shepherd falls to 11-12, while West Chester improves to 24-10. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
