Box Score BECKLEY, W.Va. – Trey Salisbury scored on a balk in the 10th inning to lift West Virginia State to an 8-7 win over Shepherd University in Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament action at Linda K. Epling Stadium on Sunday.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as senior catcher
Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) led off with a single and later scored when junior designated hitter
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) grounded into a double play.
Shepherd extended its lead to 2-0 in the third as sophomore outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led off with a single and later scored on a single by senior outfielder
Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC).
West Virginia State took advantage of two Shepherd errors to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a two-run single by Phil Mandt keying the rally.
Shepherd tied the game in the fifth as senior second baseman
Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by senior third baseman
Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa), and scored on a single by Carney.
Shepherd plated four runs in the eighth to grab a 7-3 lead. Wilson led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) to break the tie. Bard added an RBI-single, while Shemer had a two-run single to key the rally.
State rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Josh Kiser had an RBI-single and Mandt drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-5.
The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Jamis Jones drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Tren Porter tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
Mandt led off the 10th with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Trey Salisbury. Salibury moved to second on a sacrifice and later went to third on a single by Bran Wright.
Carney went 4-for-4, while Wilson was 3-for-5 to pace the Rams.
Mandt went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Anthony Payne was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead State.
Martin (7.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 Ks, 1 BB) took the loss to fall to 3-2. Russell Thompson (9-1) tossed hitless ball in the 10th to gain the win for the Yellow Jackets.
Shepherd falls to 39-11, while West Virginia State improves to 34-14. The two teams return to action return to action at 4:30 p.m. for the championship game.
