Box Score BECKLEY, W.Va. – West Virginia State rallied past Shepherd for a 5-4 win in 10 innings to win the Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium on Sunday.
West Virginia State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Josh Kiser led off with a single and later scored on a single by Jordan Simpson.
Shepherd tied the game with a run in the fourth as senior first baseman
Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) was hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a single by junior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State), and scored on a single off the bat of junior designated hitter/pitcher
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC).
The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the sixth behind a solo blast by senior catcher
Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) and an RBI-single by Crater.
Shepherd added a run in the seventh when Carney led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
State cut the lead to 4-2 in the eighth on a solo homer by Anthony Payne.
Cody Smith hit a two-run homer in the ninth to take the game to extra innings.
State pushed across the game-winning run in the 10th when Kiser singled and later scored on an infield error.
Porter went 3-for-4, while Crater and Wolfe each added a pair of hits for the Rams.
Crater (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (10-3) took the loss. Yellow Jacket reliever Josh Falbo (3.2 IP, 3 H. 2Ks, 4 BB) (1-2) gained the win.
Shepherd falls to 39-12, while West Virginia State improves to 35-14. The Rams await word on seeding for next week's NCAA II Regional Tournament.
