Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University wrapped up the Mountain East Conference regular season title with a sweep over Fairmont State in baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. The Rams recorded a 13-10 win in game one and added a 12-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a two-run homer by senior first baseman
Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) and a sacrifice fly by senior catcher
Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken).
After the Falcons scored a pair of runs on a two-run single by Franklin Wilson in the second, Shepherd got a grand slam by senior outfielder
Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-2 advantage.
Shepherd added six runs over the next three innings to take a 13-5 lead and held on for the 13-10 victory.
Sophomore outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Wolfe and Wyshinksi each drove in three runs to lead the Rams.
Josh Wine and Nick Rush each had a pair of hits and Wilson drove in three runs to pace the Falcons.
Senior starter
Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary School) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 7 Ks, 2 BB) (8-1) gained the win. Falcon starter Chase Fitzwater (1.2 IP 3 H, 7 ER, 0 Ks, 3 BB) (0-3) took the loss.
Trailing 3-2 in the third inning in the nightcap, Shepherd scored four runs in the third and four more in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Wolfe had a two-run triple to key the third inning rally, while Carney hit a two-run triple and Sarty belted a solo blast to highlight the scoring outburst in the fourth.
Shepherd added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher
Chase Smallwood (Stephens City, Va./Sherando).
Carney and Wilson each had three hits for the Rams. Wilson scored four times and drove in a pair of runs.
Christian Hedinger smacked a solo homer for the Falcons.
Junior
John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 1 BB) (5-2) gained the win for the Rams. Falcon starter Tyler Holt (3.1 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 3 Ks, 2 BB) (3-4) took the loss.
Shepherd improves to 36-10, 35-9 in MEC play, while Fairmont State falls to 9-34, 8-32. The Rams await word on seeding for next week's MEC Baseball Tournament.
