Shepherd Women Down Winston-Salem State in Overtime

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored five of her team-high 21 points in overtime to lead Shepherd University (1-0) to a 72-66 win over Winston Salem State (0-1) in first day women's basketball action of the Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Friday.

Arden hit on 7-of-15 shots with a 3-of-6 effort from three-point range. She was 4-of-4 from the foul line.

Sophomore guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) added 17 points, a team-high 10 rebounds and a game-high six assists. Junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) had 15 points, while senior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) tossed in 11 points and handed out five assists.

Tiana Edwards had a game-high 22 points to pace Winston-Salem State. Jazmine Carter added 11 points, while Kandace Tate had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Carter hit a three-pointer for Winston-Salem State with three seconds left in regulation to force the extra period.

Shepherd outscored Winston-Salem State 14-8 in overtime to notch the victory.

Shepherd shot 38.2 percent (25-59) from the floor with a 29.6 percent effort (8-27) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 85.7 percent (12-14) from the charity stripe.

Winston-Salem State connected on 42.4 percent (26-60) from the floor with a 44.4 percent (4-9) performance from beyond the arc. The Rams hit on 75 percent (12-16) of their free throws.

Winston-Salem State had a 47-32 edge on the boards. Shepherd forced 32 turnovers and committed 20.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Shaw for a 3 p.m. contest in final day action of the Conference Classic.
