Mason Leads Shepherd Women Past West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Senior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored 14 points and handed out a game-high seven assists to lead Shepherd University (3-4, 1-2 MEC) to a 69-57 win over West Liberty (1-6, 1-2 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at West Liberty on Wednesday night.

Mason, who tied West Liberty's Marissa Brown for game-high scoring honors, hit on 5-of-12 field goals with a 4-of-7 effort from the foul line. Mason added four rebounds and a game and career-high seven steals.

Senior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York), junior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove), and junior guard Tiffany McKinney (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC) each added 10 points for the Rams. McKinney also grabbed a game-high six rebounds.

Lindsay Fenwick added 11 points for the Hilltoppers, while Brown and Emily Bucon each had six boards to tie McKinney for game-high rebounding honors.

West Liberty had a 33-28 lead at halftime.

The Rams took the lead for good at 42-41 on a jumper by Arden with 4:41 left in the third period.

Shepherd shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor with a 35.7 percent effort (5-14) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 63.6 percent (14-22) from the charity stripe.

West Liberty connected on 36.5 percent (23-63) from the floor with a 29.2 percent (7-24) performance from beyond the arc. The Hilltoppers hit on 50 percent (4-8) of their free throws.

West Liberty had a 38-36 edge in rebounds. Shepherd forced 21 turnovers and committed 18.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit at 2 p.m. for Alumni Day.
