Shepherd Football Downs West Virginia Wesleyan in Season Opener

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN,W.Va. – Senior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) completed 21-of-28 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shepherd University (1-0) to a 27-12 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

West Virginia Wesleyan took a 7-0 lead when quarterback Luke Casey scored on a one-yard run with 8:38 left in the first quarter.

Shepherd answered back on a four-yard touchdown run by redshirt-freshman running back Deonte Glover (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) with 8:20 left in the second quarter. The point after attempt was blocked by Alexus Humphries and recovered by Chad Pinson, who raced 95 yards for the two-point play to give the Bobcats a 9-6 lead.

Shepherd took a 13-9 lead when freshman running back Brandon Hlavach (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) scored on a one-yard run with 4:36 left in the half. Freshman kicker Brendan Feehan (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added the extra point.

Shepherd extended its lead to 20-9 when Ziemba teamed with sophomore wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) on an 11-yard scoring pass.

Minutes later Ziemba connected with senior wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) on a 10-yard touchdown with 6:36 left in the third quarter.

Tyler Fischer connected on a 32-yard field goal with with 1:29 remaining to complete the scoring.

Hlavach rushed 12 times for 76 yards to lead the Shepherd ground attack. Glover added 43 yards on 13 carries. Michael Anderson had 25 carries for a game-high 84 yards for the Bobcats.

Feiss had 10 catches for 133 yards, while Brown added seven receptions for 97 yards to lead the Shepherd receiving corps. Marcus Smith had four catches for 113 yards to pace West Virginia Wesleyan

Shepherd amassed 430 yards of total offense while West Virginia Wesleyan totaled 275 yards.

Redshirt-freshman cornerback Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the Rams with 10 tackles (8 solo). Junior outside linebacker Tre Anderson added nine stops (6 solo), while senior inside linebacker Octavius Thomas (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) contributed eight tackles (3 solo). Nate Simmons had nine tackles (7 solo) to lead the Bobcats.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Charleston for a 7 p.m. contest.

Notes: Jeff Ziemba had 21 completions on the day to reach 522 for his career and tie the school career mark held by Joel Gordon (1999-2002) … Brown's seven catches today give him 157 for his career, leaving one shy of the school mark held by Jason Dirting (1998-2001).
