Strong Shooting Effort Leads Shepherd Women Past West Virginia State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a game-high 21 points and freshman guard Lauren Reed (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) added a career-high 18 to lead Shepherd University (5-10, 2-5 MEC) to an 87-78 win over West Virginia State (7-6, 4-3 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Sunday afternoon.

Arden hit on 7-of-15 shot from the floor with a 1-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Reed hit on 6-of-8 shots from beyond the arc . Her six three-pointers are one shy of the school single game mark.

Junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) added 15 points. Sophomore guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) tossed in 13 points, while senior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) posted her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added eight points and game highs of seven assists and five steals.

Aurreshae Hines had 15 points and five rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Shealyn Shafer added 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Rams used a strong second period as they rallied from a 24-17 first period deficit to take a 44-37 lead at the break. Arden (15) and Reed combined for 24 first half points.

Shepherd led by as many as 18 points early in the final period and held a double-digit lead until the game's final minute.

Shepherd shot a season-high 50.8 percent (32-63) from the floor with a 60 percent effort (9-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 60.9 percent (14-23) from the charity stripe.

West Virginia State hit on 40.8 percent (29-71) from the floor with a 35.1 percent (13-17) performance from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets connected on 50 percent (7-14) of their free throws.

State had a 43-38 edge in rebounds. Shepherd forced 19 turnovers and committed 14.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host University of Charleston for a 5:30 p.m. game.
