Arden Leads Shepherd Women Past Shippensburg; Sets Scoring Mark

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) fired in a three-pointer as time expired to lead Shepherd University to a 65-62 win over Shippensburg in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night. Arden paced the Rams with 23 points and became Shepherd's all-time leading scorer with 1,581 points as she surpassed the old mark of 1,572 set by Sherry Price (1982-86).

Arden hit on 7-of-15 field goals with a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range. She was 7-of-8 from the foul line.  Arden also tied Shippensburg's Kasey Engle with a game-high four assists.

Junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) added 16 points, while junior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) had 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Ariel Jones scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Raiders (1-10). Kristin McGeough added 12 points, while Kryshell Gordy grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Shippensburg had a 29-26 lead at halftime as Jones (8) and Victoria Blackburn (6) combined for 14 first-half points.

Shepherd trailed by as many as 13 points in the fourth period. The Rams proceeded on a 17-3 run and took the lead at 60-59 with 2:38 left after Arden hit a pair of free throws on a bench technical.Moorman had seven points to fuel the run.

Shippensburg battled back to tie the game at 62-62 when Jones drained a pair of free throws with 49 seconds left. Shippensburg missed a pair of free throws in the finals seconds and Shepherd took a timeout with 0.6 seconds left in regulation to set the stage for Arden's last-second heroics.

Shepherd shot 41 percent (25-61) from the floor with a 23.5 percent effort (4-17) from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 84.6 percent (11-13) of their free throws.Shippensburg hit on 35.7 percent (20-56) from the floor with a 46.2 percent (6-13) performance from beyond the arc. The Raiders connected on 64 percent (16-25) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 39-38 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed 17.

The Rams return to action on Dec. 30 when they travel to Virginia State for a 2 p.m. contest.

Notes: Arden broke all-time scoring mark with 48 seconds left in the third period when she drained the front end of two free throws to cut the Shippensburg lead to 51-40 ... Arden moves into a tie with Ashley van Norden (2000-04) for fifth place on the Shepherd all-time assists list with 329.
